It is thought to have once been a peasant game that gained prominence in wealthy European circles. Most mallets on the market today are crafted from hardwoods with matching shafts, commonly crafted from ash or hickory. Some feature grips for greater control and they're available in both adult and youth sizes. The traditional styles feature rounded heads but you'll also find square heads that are equally popular, especially in competition. Heavier heads, with 9-11 inch lengths are generally preferred. Either shape is acceptable for regulation play. They may also be available with plain faces or capped ends that protect the wood from dings. Always keep mallets upright, especially woods, and avoid temperature variances, which can distort and loosen the handles.

For choices in mallet weights, go lighter if you're a stronger player and heavier for smaller, less athletic individuals. This aids in control and accuracy. Standard lengths are three feet but should vary according to personal preference. It's not always the taller players that require longer mallets; simply the choice of stance.

Standard ball colors include yellow, red, blue and black. For additional players, you'll also see the secondary color group that may incorporate brown and green shades followed by pink and white. Some lighter weight designs are geared specifically for children or beginners.

You may wish to purchase a set for up to eight players. These are available from beginner to pro levels and include all the gear you'll need for family, group or competition play. In most sets, you'll find mallets, balls, flags, clips, wickets, markers and stakes. Families and individuals who simply enjoy a weekend get-together will probably select sets designed for "entry level" players.
